1959 Chevrolet Corvette Bill Mitchell “Stingray” Prototype

It all started with the fact that in 1957 the engineers of Chevrolet once again assembled an experimental chassis. Such designs were many: they were used as aggregate carriers in the development of a new Corvette SS car. But this chassis has attracted the Vice President of General Motors-style center William Mitchell. A year later, when all the experimental work with this chassis has been completed, and the units removed, Mitchell… bought it for $ 500.

By the beginning of the racing season in 1959 the car was ready. Although for two years this machine has never managed to win the first place, it still brought many times the racers to finish second and third, and because of this she was treated with great respect in the circle of professionals.

In 1961, in the style center of General Motors was decided that the Stingray is worthy to be converted into a show car. And they gave it gloss: polished, elegant interior of the cockpit and all that. Also on this almost a homemade car appeared the inscriptions Corvette and Fuel Injection.

The debut of the car was held at the Motor Show in Chicago in the same 1961. After the exhibition, the car was equipped additionally with a windscreen for the passenger, speedometer and frames for license plates. As such, the Corvette Stingray returned to Mitchell and for few years it served him faithfully as a vehicle: with this car he drove to work.
