Getting your driver’s license and heading out in your car can be a lot of fun. You get to go wherever you want – within reason – whenever you want. But, to ensure this level of freedom remains yours for the long-term, you also need to be a safe driver.

The reality of driving in the US is that over 37,000 people die in car crashes every year. It’s a shocking statistic, but, with more effort and thought to safety, you can avoid adding to that number.

Never drive when you’re ‘tired and emotional’

Of course, that’s a press euphemism for being drunk or high. But it’s true. Never get behind the wheel of a car if you aren’t sober. While you might get lucky once, or even twice, if you repeat the behavior, your luck will eventually run out. Following guidelines, and getting a good car insurance policy matters more than you can imagine, as it can save you and others a lot of trouble.

If you want to drive then don’t drink. Or, if you do want to let your hair down and enjoy an alcoholic beverage, make alternative travel arrangements for your night out. It might mean paying for a cab, but at least you’ll get home safely, after enjoying a fun time.

Don’t neglect your car’s health

While there are few obligatory car safety checks in the US, that doesn’t mean you should neglect your vehicle. If there’s a noise or handling issue you don’t like, then take it into your local workshop.

They’ll be happy to give your car the once over and if there’s nothing wrong at least you’ve had it checked out. But, if there is a problem, you’ll be very pleased it was caught and fixed before it affected your driving in a dangerous way.

Always stick to the speed limit

Speed limits might seem like someone’s idea of spoiling your fun, but believe it or not, it’s for your own good. If you drive too fast in built-up areas, you have less time to react to something, which can easily resulting in accident.

Or, even when you’re driving on a faster road, you still need to remain within the speed limit. After all, an accident at faster speeds are more likely to end badly – for everyone involved.
