While hoverboards may seem like they’re an item of the future, Lexus has made some serious efforts to bring this dream one step closer to reality.
In the sneak peak commercial we saw a hoverboard in a TV ad for the new Lexus which the Verge has reviewed first hand to test its validity and see whether it’s another internet hoax, or the real deal. The Lexus team was originally impressed as it can be seen on the video but they did figure out some serious limitations to this device. The superconductors are in a constant need of being cooled down by liquid nitrogen which gives the hoverboard about 15 minutes of runtime before it needs to be refueled again. It can also only run on a specific track built for the purpose of hovering which is powered by magnets, but essentially it’s a hoverboard and it does hover by levitating off the ground. Can we expect to see this model in the near future on a larger scale? Probably not, as it’s restricted to purpose built hover parks.
Nonetheless this device does seem like something out of the future and even though it’s not what the back to the future model presented, it is a good indication of what we might see in the not so distant future.
