When you mention Irish International Grand Prix not many people would associate Ireland with such an event. However, those who have read some bit of history would tell you that between 1929 and 1931, the country was playing host to an event known as the Irish Grand Prix, an open motor race on a 4.25-mile circuit that was laid out in Phoenix Park in Dublin. Those who remember these events nostalgically recall the pride of the Irish motor race and how it helped the country get onto the map.
If you are into online betting in Ireland, perhaps one question that you would pose to a person who may have witnessed the events is whether they used to bet on this race. Given that the event was last held almost ninety years ago, getting such an individual would be a challenge and if you happen to get one, it would be a miracle if he or she recalls the events in such detail. If you are lucky to get a betting enthusiast, share with them the current gambling trends including the Astropay bookmakers, sportsbook who may not be prevalent in Europe but are known for their best odds.
Keen on avoiding the risk of drifting too much into the past, let Kate Richardson, a sports enthusiast, and online betting expert give us the exciting news about a future Irish Grand Prix, and perhaps we can predict that it may excite the nation as the event did ninety years ago.
Irish International Grand Prix in 2025
It has been described as a “once in a lifetime event” and it is not only in Ireland. It is an exciting project that will see countries that have not hosted such an event, at least in the recent past for some, get a chance. Formula One organization made this announcement during the Bahrain 2021 Formula One event where an exciting new edition of future formula one seasons was announced.
This edition aims at bringing Formula One to a wider audience. The motoring organization has introduced the rotation system where a race will be held in a country that has not been hosted in the past. They decided that starting in 2022 two races will be added to the calendar for the next year.
The rotation calendars that will see Ireland host the event in 2025 looks like this:
- 2022 will see Uruguay and New Zealand hosting the inaugural race
- Papua New Guinea and Kenya will host the event in 2023
- Finland and Peru in 2024
- 2025 will have Ireland and Peru hosting the F1
- 2026 the event will be in Cameroon and The Philippines
- 2027 will have Croatia and Venezuela
- 2028- Norway and Pakistan
- 2029 will have Tunisia and Fiji hosting
- 2030 hosts will be Mongolia and Estonia
- 2031 will see Iceland and Chile host the event
Wexford town
Phoenix circuit was the choice for the 1930s motor race but ninety years later Wexford has been selected to host the much-awaited event. The choice of this town is due to its proximity to Rosslare Europort as teams will ship in their cars and other accessories from different parts of Europe with ease. Also, the town is not new to holding high-profile international sporting events, Tour de France among others has been successfully hosted in the town.
The local economy is expected to be greatly stimulated as the event is projected to be worth one billion Euros. Preparations have already started four years before the event. Retired F1 champion Bernie Ecclestone visited to examine the circuit and he was confident that Wexford town is up to the task as far as hosting the event of this magnitude is concerned.
Wexford is supposed to benchmark with Monaco, the examination found that the town has the potential to hold a landmark event. Expectations are high, organizers are optimistic that the same support that the event got ninety years will be extended. We may be living at different times but F1 racing fans are expected to show huge support for the event.
The Wexford circuit
There are a number of comparisons between the Monaco and Wexford Circuit; they include the tight chicanes, narrow streets, beautiful waterfront scenes, and potential mooring facilities. Also, just like the Monaco circuit, it will run clockwise around the town. From the starting point, the driver will cruise south along the quay to Talbot Hotel passing through the Sailing cot Pub and returning through the Faythe, Michael Street, Tesco Park, and tunnel. After exiting the park they will drive through Distillery road, Joseph’s, School, John, Hill, 1798 streets and then finishing at the Quay front. The total distance will be 4.7 kilometers with Crescent Curve, Tesco Tune, and Square Chicane being the popular spectators’ points.
Preparations
Town authorities have already been notified and are aware of the challenges that come with hosting such events where temporary adjustments have to be made. For the locals, the event comes as good news as they will benefit from the adjustments which need to be made. All the roads which will be used for the event need to be resurfaced to a given standard. So apart from getting a chance to see F1 champions competing in their streets, the locals will have improved infrastructure in their town. Also, the one billion event budget will leave the town better than it was before. Further engagements with the residents are planned in the future as the preparations get into higher gear.
The 2025 Irish Grand Prix will be a historic event; it will bring similar excitement as it did in the 1930s. Earlier events were very important to the country as they put it on the map. It is expected that the 2025 event will have a similar event, showcase Ireland as a great host. It will show the world that the country has the capacity to hold big international events. It may be the beginning of big things, a chance to host world-class events.
