China claims to have found the deepest blue hole in the world. On July 26th, the Chinese Television “CCTV” announced that the “Dragon hole” that is 300 meters deep was discovered and is the deepest underwater hole on Earth.
The South China Sea is a questionable territory for which for years have been fighting Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines, Taiwan and of course China. This sea is known for its natural resources and an overview of many sea routes. In addition, it is one of most conflict zones in the world.
The hole is located in the archipelago of the Paracel Islands, another controversial area the ownership of which is a reason for fight between China, Taiwan and Vietnam, and locals called this hole the “eye” of the sea.
Chinese researchers measured the “Dragon hole” through a robot, which has sensors for depth and found that it was about 300 meters deep.
Scientists have discovered the deepest underwater hole of the world. Until now it was believed that the Dean’s blue hole in the Bahamas is the deepest hole with depth of 202 meters. However, the hole in the South China Sea called “dragon hole” is deeper than it with almost 100 meters.
Yang Zuosheng, professor at the Chinese University said his team of researchers used a number of methods to determine the exact depth of the hole. “The depth of the hole has been confirmed by a series of calibrations which found that it is 300 meters deep,” he said.
Blue holes occurred during the last ice age. It is a vertical submerged cave that can be located in the sea or on land, and in recent years have become a tourist and academic destination. There are many around the world, but the most numerous are in low-lying coastal areas. Most of these can be found in Belize, the Bahamas in Guam, Australia and Egypt.
