The United States did not have a long history of building medium-duty tanks in WWII early days. The M3 medium duty tank was far from flawless. It featured a sponson-mounted 75mm cannon. The M3 included riveted armor as well which could splash rivets inside the tank if hit by enemy fire. The M4 Sherman included a 75mm gun and an updated, welded hull. Though containing several flaws and being outranked the German tanks some later period in the war, the M4 won a lot of battles.
