Drifting was invented in Japan in the 70s as part of the Japanese track racing. Kunimitsu Takahashi is considered the father of Drift techniques in times when traction control and stabilization system of the car has not been found and the power of the cars were quite high. His trademark was when entering the apex of the turn to feed many gas and rump served with very high speed and maintaining that speed to the exit of the turn (now known as Power Slide).
This earned him several championships, and most importantly, an army of loyal fans coming to watch his spectacular performances on the track. Runway contestants fought in this way, and street racers imitate them on mountain roads, and so were born the first drifters in Japan.
