At first sight the suspension seems like a simple “thing” which can be easily explained, but actually it is a very complex balancing act which influences the car behavior on the roads. There are many factors which influence the suspension behavior but we will break it on this main five:
– Spring and dampers
– Sprung vs unsprung mass
– Will upgrade to coilover improve your suspension?
– What you should choose: soft or stiff?
– Let’s don’t avoid the anti-roll bars.
We will begin with the basics. Suspension’s duty is to keep the tires on the road. The building blocks of every suspension are the spring and the dampers.
The springs are actually energy absorbers, they absorb the shocks which are send on the tires and stores them as kinetic energy. When they are able they’ll decompress the energy and move the tire back on the road. So, any contact of the tire and any shock on it will result with compressing energy and decompressing when the spring will be able.
