Sprung vs unsprung mass. In theory this sounds a lot simpler than it is. Yeah, we can divide everything supported by the car suspension engine, chassis, driver etc. in sprung mass and the rest like wheels, brake rotors, tires etc. as unsprung mass. The tricky thing here is the link between these two.
There is a common myth that if you remove 1 kg of the unsprung weight you will increase the acceleration. But this can’t be take for granted because the flywheel affects the acceleration also and it is a part of the sprung mass. We know that the rule is to remove of the rotating weight more than the non-rotating weight, so our point here is that the rule is quite flawed.
