And what is a sports cat?
A sports cat is capable to do every job of a standard cat but in a much more efficient and sleek manner. The honeycomb structure found in a standard cat is made in such way to maximize the surface area of the catalysts, while at the same time it keeps the overall volumes of the catalyst low because of the high cost of the precious metals that are being used.
Unfortunately, the honeycomb can also obstruct the quick and efficient exiting of the exhaust gasses to the surroundings. Therefore, a catalytic converter slows the exhaust gasses down, thus enabling the engine to work harder and so the engine struggles to release out all the exhaust gasses after every engine cycle. This honeycomb structure is also capable to fall apart due to overheating, which in-turn creates an additional blockage for the exhaust gases.

The main purpose of an exhaust system is to remove the exhaust gasses from the engine in a smooth and swift way, whereas restrictions and expansions such as a big catalytic converter only cause turbulence which in-turn leads to disturbed and slower airflow. Sport cats are aimed to overcome this problem. They do that by decreasing the chamber size which creates a much smoother surface inside the chamber that allows the gasses to flow faster and easier through it.
In order to maintain the gas emissions down, the ceramics-based matrix inside the honeycomb structure is much finer than the one found in a normal cat, which allows it to make sure the catalysts can convert the emitted gasses with full effect to where they need to be to meet emission regulations. If you switch to a sport cat, you can achieve a small increase in power, whereas the engine cycle is being freed-up and able to maximize its efficiency.
On the following picture we can see a disintegrated honeycomb structure within as the result of extremely high temperatures which occur due to the unburnt fuel.
