Ladies and gentlemen and all you other petrolheads, allow us to present you the largest and most powerful diesel engine in the world, the mighty Wärtsilä RT-flex96C. You probably might have heard about this impressive piece of engineering before, but it is our utmost pleasure to write about it.
This huge machine which is 13.5 meters high, 26.59 meters long, weighing more than 2,300 tonnes is capable to produce incredible amount of 80,080 KW (107,390 hp)! And just wait till you hear about the torque, you won’t believe that this beast can develop up to 5,608,310 lbf·ft of torque at 102 rpm! So, we would conclude that this definitely makes it the biggest reciprocating engine on the planet!
The Wärtsilä RT-flex96C engine was built in Korea, while designed by a company from Finland. Its design features the use of common rail technology rather than traditional camshaft, chain gear, hydraulic actuators and fuel pumps. All of this enables the Wärtsilä to have maximum performance at low revolutions per minute, as well as lower harmful emissions and fuel consumption.
