Finally the efforts of Audi paid off! In the recent years they were trying to develop a new green fuel and move away from the fossil fuels. They succeeded to develop synthetic natural gas and synthetic diesel and now they are one step away to fully develop synthetic gasoline.
Audi named this new fuel juice as “Synthetic E-Benzin” and the proud fathers of this fuel are Audi and the French company, Global Bioenergies. The synthetic E-Benzin is created with the process of fermentation of the pilot plant material, corn glucose. With this process is produced the isobutene and next converted in liquid form.
The next step of the process is executed in Germany, in the Fraunhofer Center for Biotechnological Processes. There, with the help of hydrogen the isobutene is transformed into isooctane, the key ingredient which powers the vehicle’s engine. From here we can see that Audi doesn’t want to abandon the internal combustion engine!
The synthetic E-Benzin would be labelled as Unleaded 100 with RON 100 octane rating. As we know this fuel besides the fact that is additive which improves gasoline quality, it can be used as standalone fuel, and also can be used in the production of the plastic products.
The most important thing is that this fuel doesn’t contain any sulfur, burns very cleanly and all this will provide the engines with high-compression ratios!
Furthermore Audi will test this fuel in their labs with test engines and the mass production will start in 2016.
