1963-1987 Jeep Gladiator and J-Series trucks
The Gladiator pickup truck was released as the replacement of Jeep for both its Willys pickup and the Jeep Forward Control. This Jeep was a much more modern full-size pickup than the previous workhorses by Jeep. The Gladiator was contemporary enough that, with a few updates and styling changes, it stayed in production without a ground-up redesign for 24 years.
The earliest models of the Gladiator had an advanced six-cylinder engine under the hood, while bigger V-8 engines were offered as an option throughout the lifespan of the Jeep Gladiator and later the J-10 and J-20 models. Since the company Jeep didn’t built its own V8 engines, these trucks were supplied by AMC and Buick. The biggest was the AMC 401 V8, which at the same time was the largest engine ever installed in a Jeep pickup truck.
By 1976, the J-trucks received a new frame, and the excellent Honcho package was available in the late 1970s.
