Let us tell you a little history about unicycling. It’s not so old discipline, its origins are from the 19th century, at that time named as Penny-farthing. During the 80s of the past century some extreme sportsmen took interests in unicycling and modify it into off-road.
Unicycles are simple, constructed from few key parts: wheel – which includes the tire, the rim, the spokes, the hub and the axle), the cranks, the pedal, the fork and the saddle.
There are few types of unicycles, freestyles unicycles – like the one used in our video, trials unicycles, mountain unicycles, touring unicycles and other variations. One unicycle stands out from this group, the seatless unicycle called “Ultimate wheel”.
Interesting fact is the speed of the unicycles. It depends from the size of the wheel, 20″ – Avg. 5 mph (8.0 km/h) – Max. 9 mph (14 km/h), 24″ – Avg. 7 mph (11 km/h) – Max. 12 mph (19 km/h), 29″ – Avg. 10 mph (16 km/h)- Max 17 mph (27 km/h), 36″ – Avg. 11 mph (18 km/h) – Max 28 mph (45 km/h).
So, enough history and enough for parts and variations, speed details… Just watch this guy from Taiwan and his freestyle discipline, doing miracles with it, like is a circus acrobat (he might be, who knows).
