Driving a turbo diesel car is rather satisfying when the turbo kicks in, but do you hate the two or three seconds lag?
When you most need it, there is the lag and you just sit there waiting for the turbo, but imagine if this lag was gone. Imagine that whenever you step on the throttle, there is a turbo kick waiting for you, with no lag at all. That is what Volvo has invented, turbo diesel with no lag at all. Sounds great?
Here is how they did it. There is an electric air compressor, which will build up air pressure in the air tank, where there will be a compressed air waiting for you. When you decide to accelerate, this compressed air from the tank, will be immediately released in the exhaust manifold, feeding the turbo instantly.
This way the turbo will kick in the same second the air was released and you will get the turbo acceleration every time. The air tank will be topped after every time it was released, ensuring you that when you need it you will have it. Good job Volvo, and thank you for deleting the annoying lag.
