What is drifting? Basically drifting can be explained as controlled oversteering. This can be technically explained as the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle. That means the back of your car will lose grip and start sliding while you need to control the steering. Sound as easy as those few sentences above, but it isn’t!
The approach to this matter is more scientific than just an explanation. When the car comes to the corner, the front wheel must pointing into the opposite direction that the corner itself. The small angle between the front wheels is the front slip angle. The rear tires sliding path and the supposed path make the rear slip angle. Sounds a little bit confusing but you will see it on the video what are these angles, what is drifting and how it is happening. Of course this needs to be done fast with the use of the hand brake in order the rear wheels to start losing the grip and slide.
But there are different techniques which are used in drifting and we must mention them in order to explain the real fundamentals of drifting.
There are many ways to engage in drifting. One is mentioned above with the help of the handbrake, another used one is using the clutch. When you approach the corner first you use the brake to slow down a little bit and next you disengage the clutch. After you press on the throttle and reengage the clutch again and this will result in spinning the tires. Next you just balance the throttle while tires are spinning to maintain the drifting.
It is really wide matter what we have here and of course demands a lot of practice and money because you will break a lot of cars until you became a pro. Watch the video bellow for detailed explanation about what is drifting.
