When it comes to people who are willing and prepared to get on a bike and head down the drag strip, we truly applaud their courage because honestly, we think that some of these bikers must be out of their minds. I mean, if driving at uncontrollable speeds close and over 200 mph is still not enough for you, well, this particular drag race just threw a whole new fiery curveball into the mix. There isn’t anything that’s more exciting than watching bikers go head to head in a duel of speed at the drag strip. Unfortunately for this unlucky racer, things went wrong when his nitrous boosted Suzuki Hayabusa exploded mid-pass. This shocking explosion took place at the Maryland International Raceway at the IDBL WPGC Bike Fest this summer.
While headed down the drag strip on a 7.8-second dial, a routine Top Sportsman pass would get hot very quickly as a terrifying nitrous explosion would send this Suzuki Hayabusa and the bike rider up into a large ball of fire.
This year’s edition of the WPGC Bike Fest will definitely be remembered for that unbearable moment of near tragedy. The incredibly successful and popular MDIR racer Shayne Proctor was on a routine pass down the drag strip in Top Sportsman. He was riding the nitrous boosted Suzuki Hayabusa that belongs to Willie Nichol, Shayne left the start line unusually late against his opponent Brian Fandel and rode with a goal of catching Brian up. But right at the eighth mile of the drag strip the bike faced a malfunction and a nitrous airbox explosion occurred with a big ball of fire engulfing the Suzuki Hayabusa.
Proctor managed to ride out to the finish line where spectators claim they saw him wheeling the Hayabusa with no hands before slowing down enough to escape the intense heat. He faced a dislocated shoulder and some burns from the accident, but it is reported that these injuries are no threat to his life and Proctor should make a full recovery.
Check out how it all happened at the following video which features the dramatic event that sadly led Proctor on a trip to the hospital. We wish him a quick recovery.
