This mighty bird for the first time flew at the skies on 21 December 1988 with a 74min flight from Kiev. Back in those days only two airplanes Antonov An-225 were ordered and only one finished. The second airplane was born during the late 1980s for the Soviet space program to carry Buran on the top. For that circumstances the tail was redesigned also. But actually the second airplane was never finished because of the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990 and it was stored.
This massive, gigantic steel bird can carry ultra heavy loads up to 250tons internally and 200tons on its back.
The need for the second Antonov An-225 appeared in 2006, and the restoration was scheduled to start in 2008, but the airplane was not completed by August 2009 and the project was abandoned. So in 2011 we heard from the Antonov CEO that they need $300 million for the airplane to be finished. So we will consider that the second is 60-70% ready.
The airplane heart are the six Ivchenko Progress D-18T turbofan engines and for the landing are responsible 32 wheels which are enabling the plane to turn in 200ft wide runaway. Watch the video bellow and see this huge mighty bird which is king of the skies.
