The Sequential gearbox is not a traditional type of gearbox and you will not see it in a Toyota Prius or a Honda Civic, the sequential gearbox can be seen and used only in the high performance motorcycles and race cars as well. So what makes this gearbox different than the others and why it is only used in the racing world? Maybe because you cannot skip a gear here with it. Direct access to specific gears is not allowed with it, so you need to start with first and make your way up. Same goes for the downshift as well. From third to first is not possible, only if you pull the handle twice. That’s why it is called Sequential gearbox.
With the normal transmission the driver can choose the gear wanted with the shifter, moving it to the desired position and the desired gear as well. The clutch must be disengaged so the new gear is going to be selected to disengage the running engine at the end of the transmission.
The true Sequential gearbox and transmission is going to use the dog clutch engagement away from the commonly used synchromesh fitted to the normal H patter road car transmission. It is much easier to enter a corner with the Sequential gearbox as you just need to pull the shifter down and it will downshift a gear, without the need of the driver to select the wanted position and the gear on the H pattern gearbox.
The clutch on the Sequential gearbox will ONLY be used in standing starts of the race car. Shifting gears with the dog setup on the gearbox will be done without the use of the clutch, interrupting the torque just for a moment there. The host on the video is eager to explain it better and he will, the working of this race gearbox is just amazing.
