When it comes to the railroad welding there is one process that is called the “thermite welding”. This is a great thing to know and to understand because maybe one day your kids will ask you how it is done and you will have the great story to tell them. Also this process has to be learned and trained for some time because if you are new on the sire there is no way that you will find yourself any railroad welding yet. These workers have welded so many railroads that now they are doing this so easily and with a great flow that seems like it is very easy for them. And it is not, this is all hard work and they are doing one hell of a job.
Having smooth railroad welding using the thermite process means a lot to the trains and to the people that are using them. Smooth ride on the railroad is most important and these workers are the most important in the process. The thermite process is done when a can filled with high temperature burning material is placed over the welding spot. The head will glue together the two connecting rails ensuring that the weld is strong and secure.
After the burning can is done and the piece of metal is melted over the connected rails there is a grinding process that needs to be done in order for the welded spot to be smooth as the rail itself. There is another machine that does that job. This is one heavy grinder that needs to be lifted by two workers and places over the welded spot. Now after it is turned on, it will automatically grind the excess metal off of the welded spot leaving it so smooth that when traveling with a train you will not feel a thing.
