Inflatable or pneumatic tires have a lot of disadvantages. Merely the failed wheel can cause disability to the entire vehicle. Frustrating when such a situation occurs at the most inopportune moment. However, in the hostilities puncture can cost people their lives. For this reason, for the first time was raised the issue of the vulnerability of inflatable wheels precisely in the Pentagon, which has allocated a lot of money on the search for alternative solutions. The result was not long in coming, soon appeared the first airless tire on the military transport vehicle Humvee.

AIRLESS TIRE is expensive but i have a model of tire very good operation and Inexpensive
Nice concept, but I have a few queries that the video didn’t clearly answer…
1. How does the airless tyre fit to the rim? Is it all inclusive, do you need a special type of wheel, or can it be fitted to any wheel?
2. What are the cost savings to the user? Not every person is going to need one of these tyres, especially commuter cyclists who rarely go off-road or use thin road race like tyres. Punctures very rarely occur for these cyclists, the only thing you don’t need is a pump, but is that worth spending that much more cash on an airless tyre?
3. What about tread use? I would assume that the contact material is made from the same rubber as a normal tyre. So once it has worn out, can the tread be replaced or does a whole new airless tyre have to be purchased?

Well what they have invented is not a tyre but a complete wheel assembly…so basically if the design gets approved and if car makers are interested, they will install these wheels with the rubber strip to their brand new vehicle lineup..so, they’ll be replacing the regular steel/alloy wheels you see on cars right now. Also if this technology does catch on, then Bridgestone and Michelin will both start mass producing these wheels for all popular road vehicles that would normally be rigged with those steel wheels. As for your second question, this technology is more pertinent to motor vehicles rather than bicycles, for now at-least. Maybe they’ll introduce this tech for serious mountain bikers. As for your final question, the video does explain about replacements; is the tread wears out all that would need to be done is to swap the old tread with a new tread without ever having to replace the wheel itself. One more thing I’d like to add is that the use of such polymers, means a fairly significant weight reduction as well.
In answer to your first question Sam he does say u need to buy the whole wheel assembly and cannot just fit it to bog standard rims the wheel assembly helps towards its integrity of the airless tyre and as for question number 3 he also answers in the video and says that when the teed has worn out that u can just replace that not the whole thing in help to lower the carbon foot print with using less rubber so less that gets thrown away with no other use hope this helps with regards Michael

I see this only working in warm climates, all the holes would be filled with slush and ice in the winter.
I would imagine they’d make a covered version as well. If not for function, then form. I think they’re ugly and would want them to look like regular tires anyway and likely they will. That will solve and climate issues.

i dont see those work at all… what will happend in a hot day of driving … when the brake’s are heated… they’r gonna melt?
