Behold my friends, the Swedes have found the solution to punish only those who violate the law. We are talking about Actibump, an intelligent speed limiter which gives a “gentle” physical reminder to those who drive above the speed limit. The purpose of this traffic-calming system is to cause speed reduction in the road traffic and in this way reduce the risk for other participants in traffic.

Actibump is an automated speed limiter which activates only if the vehicle is speeding. Its operation is quite simple: an upstream radar calculates the speed of the car approaching. If the speed is above the allowed limit, the throttle of the system sinks 60mm into the ground. The driver who is speeding will experience a slight jolt which should serve as a reminder that he is driving too fast. If the car is driving below the speed limit, the system remains at the same level of the road. The Actibump was invented by the Swedish company AB Edeva. Edeva AB is a manufacturer and seller of Actibump, an intelligent road safety system. This is a capable system which provides more safety and accessibility while lowering noise and emissions. Actibump leaves the road flat when a car is driving within the proper speed limit. Speeders activate a hatch, integrated in the road structure, which reduces some only 60mm and creates inverted speed bumps.

This intelligent speed limiter has already been installed in several cities in Sweden such as Linköping, Uppsala, Malmö and the Öresund Bridge. Actibump have surprised some tourists on the Öresund bridge connecting Sweden and Denmark, but also in Linköping, Malmö, Uppsala and Vasteras. This system creates a hole, much like our potholes, to slow the cars which are speeding. It is therefore a dynamic speed breaker. It deploys only when a vehicle is moving too fast. For others, nothing happens. Cyclists can easily bypass if it had to be open to the approach of a too hasty motorist. The system provides transponders for emergency vehicles to temporarily block Actibump.
