The travel to Australia by a car can not be called crazy fun. But on the local roads you can meet these iron monsters.
Australia is definitely a country of road trains. In the Australian outback, where for hundreds of miles around you see nothing but a couple of cattle farms, or “stations,” as the truck drivers call them, the road trains are a vital necessity. Because in order to deliver their goods to the destination of the train, the owners, for example, of a sheep farm would have to get with their live load to the nearest railway at hundreds of kilometers away.
The road trains – powerful tractors, which stretches with two, three (and sometimes more) huge trailers can cross the Green Continent in a matter of days, connecting the states and territories of the country.
Modern road trains, have long been the masters of the roads and are quite comfortable. In most of the cabins of the trucks there is an air-conditioning (which is not so bad at a forty-degree heat), a small refrigerator and a truck sleeper. Life behind the wheel primitively counts down to three things: eat, sleep, and turn the steering wheel. Route operates only one important rule: as little as possible to sleep and as soon as possible to arrive at your destination. The only thing that you care about is how to keep from falling asleep at the wheel.
The reputation of a monastery for the road giants in Australia has earned the district Northern Territory. Life here is almost entirely dependent on the huge road trains that are capable of carrying up to 115 tons of cargo. If you are lucky in this part of the country you can found the “Diplodocus” of the automotive world – a road train consisting of seven trailers, which can carry up to 190 tons of cargo.
The road, which runs between South Australia and Western Australia is especially deserted and dull. Hundreds of kilometers all around no roadside cafe, no gas stations. But they are not needed – because the fuel tanks of the same Mack can hold up to 2,000 liters of fuel. Very impressive example of automotive power and mastery! 🙂
