These Russian screw-propelled vehicles were built in different sizes, power and capacity. There were lighter vehicles with engines from Luaz and Vaz, with the average engine ZIL-130, and as the top of a lineup, the huge of ZIL-4904 (aka PES-3) with two ZIL-375 power units from the Urals truck.
One and the same all-terrain vehicle was tested in two versions – the passenger (PES-3A) and cargo (PES-3AB). In the first case, behind the cabine there was a glazed passenger car body made of fiberglass for 8 people. In the cargo version of the machine the passenger module was removed and in its place was placed cargo bed covered with an awning. This vehicle intended for snowy and swamp areas had a load capacity of 2-2.5 tons.
The amphibian ZIL-4904 did not find a useful application, but many of the ideas have been used in the development of the screw-propelled ZIL-2906 that entered in the search and rescue complex “Blue Bird”.
The off-road vehicle ZIL-4904 (PES-3) was the largest rotary auger-terrain vehicle ever built.
