A century ago there was a car producer named American LaFrance Engine Company which produced fire trucks. But as the history moved forward, many things changed with World War I and this company switched to manufacturing road cars. That’s how the famous 1916 Elmira was born, and later this New York manufacturer was regarded with the name “super-fast” because of this car.
Terrence Cleife, retired motor engineer bought the 1916 American LaFrance car as a scrap metal back in 1998. This man’s passion for this car made it happen, from resting on the floor in barn to driving car on the roads.
Many parts of the car were missing, so Terrence made it on his own, from bronze details to iron parts to fit the chassis as original, also he completely restored the engine into running shape. It took him 15 years to finish the restoration. We must admit, only huge enthusiast can do this.
Of how rare and that maybe there isn’t another piece of this model speaks the fact that the famous company for fire equipment is only history besides their announcements last year that they might start operating again.
Not taking the age on mind, similar model also restored, was sold last year on auction for more than $118K, so the price of this car can go even higher. But we think Terrence it’s not planning to exchange his passion and hard work for money. The car is not for sale.
