It was named in honor of the general of the northerners during the Civil War in the United States. Several modifications Sherman in weight from 28 to 35 tons were produced. They had different weapons: 73-, 76- and 105-mm guns. The tank was well armored – up to 76 mm in the frontal part of the body and 100 mm – in front of the turret. In total to the end of the war was built 48 tanks Sherman, including 1,332 tanks RAM created by the same project in Canada. According to the English tradition, they were equipped with 40- or 57-mm cannons. The M4 tanks were supplied for the allied anti-Hitler coalition: about 4,000 samples were delivered to the USSR. The tank Sherman was the most popular and best tank of the US Army.
