When speaking of North American motorsport, Mazda used a very dignified marketing statement to promote its Mazda MX-5 model claiming that in grassroots racing, more Mazda cars race on any given weekend in North America than any other car manufacturer.

This may be true for the U.S., but it also could be the case when speaking of Mazda cars across other countries. The popularity of the Mazda MX-5 is further increased by its numerous participations in the IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship, and because of the constantly large numbers in the Global MX-5 Cup held in Japan and the U.S., as well as the Spec Miata series in the U.S. Actually, there have been over 3000 Spec Miata samples sold by the company so far!

The Mazda MX-5 certainly spread its popularity across the European racing circles, where there are specific Mazda MX-5 racing series in Austria, Sweden, and the Netherlands, among others. However, it is the car’s final goal to be the “rebirth of a typical British sportscar” that has enabled the MX-5 gain a true racing reputation on the British racetracks and on the roads in the UK too.

Do you need any proof to the previous statement? According to race commentator Scott Woodwiss, it is actually quite simple to prove this.  Namely there are currently four club level championships in Great Britain fully dedicated to the Mazda MX-5. The British Automobile Racing Club and the 750 Motor Club organize their own MX-5 racing championship each supported by its group of loyal followers. Yet, when it comes to popularity and numbers it is the pair of the British Racing & Sports Car Club which are currently the most successful. The BRSCC Mazda MX-5 SuperCup for the Mazda MX-5 Mk3 and the BRSCC Mazda MX-5 Championship for the Mk1 Mazda MX-5 model are breaking records with the number of registered participants in 2017. This only proves that the Mazda MX-5 could be an excellent way to engage in track racing without having to use up all your money.
