The German automaker, Audi have a neutral carbon diesel fuel, made only from water, carbon dioxide and renewable energy sources. And Crystal E-Diesel “light is already being used to power the Audi A8 of the Federal Minister for Education and Research of the State, Johanna Wanka.
The fuel creation is a major step forward for sustainable transport, but the fact that it is backed up by an auto giant is more exciting. Audi now has a pilot plant in Dresden, Germany, that is operated by the Sunfire technology companies, the production in the coming months will 160 liters of synthetic diesel per day. Their basic product that is called “blue crude” is created with a three-stage process. The first step is to harvest renewable energy sources like wind, hydropower and solar. Then this energy helps turn water into oxygen and pure split hydrogen, with a process called reverse electrolysis. This hydrogen is then reacted with carbon monoxide (CO), which is produced from carbon dioxide (CO2), the mixed harvested from the atmosphere. Both react at elevated temperature and pressure, which leads to the production of long-chain hydrocarbon compounds that are the raw blue.
