1966 Oldsmobile Toronado
The ’66 Oldsmobile Toronado is the first car in the United States that was built with a front-wheel-drive. Under the hood of this Olds was found a unique powertrain that consisted of an engine and transmission fitted into a compartment no larger than a traditional RWD car. GM called this powertrain the Unitized Power Package (UPP). Other components installed in the innovative 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado featured developments by General Motors such as the heavy-duty Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed automatic transmission, exhaust-manifold flange gaskets with spherical shaped, Rochester Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor, and the “Draft-Free” ventilation system that largely reduced wind noise by removing the conventional front-door vent windows.
