The Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland, or as many want to name it as the scariest bridge in America is 4.3 miles long. But at some points it reaches height of nearly 200 feet!
Just from the written above you can’t judge if this bridge is scary or not, but when you take a look at it and consider the sea level above and the missing rest places you might think for a second before you pass it? Many people can’t handle that pressure and find the driving quite terrifying. Some of them are even visiting psychiatrists to help them overcome the fear, but it is still useless, since they are not able to drive on their own.
Actually, many will find this situation funny but it is not, just look at those poor people who watched bridge accidents and related them with the the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland.
The condition with those people has evolved into business for the guy on the video who charges $25 to drive you with your car over the bridge. Yeah, he says that the business is expanding fast and while the video was recorded it was his 19th time driving the bridge for that day!

I have walked and driven the bridge several times……. it is scary for sure, especially in bad weather!
Wow that must be quite an experience Sheila.
The only time im scared to drive that bridge is when there is high winds. The car doesn’t feel sturdy at all. But in normal weather it isn’t bad. Just keep your eyes on the car in front of you and its over before you know it.

The bride that goes under the water is in Virginia, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge is in Maryland. I’ve driven both many times. One for visiting family and the other for commuting to work.
its not in maryland and you cannot go below the speed limit on it i go over it all the time its no big deal

Not nearly as scared as some of the what I call “sky” ramps around Baltimore. The 395 ramp & the I95 ramps near White Marsh.

I get sick every time I’m on it. Last year the bay was frozen under it that was probably the prettiest things I’ve ever seen.

I drive over the bridge at least once a week. Because of how often I drive over it, I am not phased by it. Although, driving at night time with on coming traffic on the same bridge is a little scary because everyone gets pushed over so far due to people not wanting to drive close to the wall. Other then that the scariest thing is the traffic you can find yourself in! During the summer weekends, you can count on it taking hours just to get thru tolls and over the bridge. The best thing to do is to keep your eyes on the car in front of you and keep some distance.

I commute over that bridge every day Monday through Friday for work. The only thing that makes it scary is the people that are not paying attention to the traffic in front of them and only to the boats in the water. That’s what causes a majority of the accidents.
I know what you mean Mary. Accidents happen almost all the time because of irresponsible driving.
I thought I was the only one scared of that bridge! I start hyperventilating, sweating and am terrified of that bridge! I even pissed myself one time! I have night terrors about it!

My daughter had to drive over the Bay Bridge the day she got her drivers license! There was a family emergency, not a planned trip. She did great though and has never been scared of driving across bridges!

For all of you who have walked this bridge, don’t know how how you did it! #1 it is not an pedestrian accessible bridge, #2. In total, it’s 17 miles long!!

The walk is an annual fund raiser, when one of the two Bridges is closed to vehicular traffic, so that pedestrians are the only ones on that structure for the duration of the event.

I have been driving over the Bay Bridge for the last 40 years and it has never scared me in the least. I find it a beautiful drive over the Chesapeake Bay. Bridges are fine. Personally I get a little freaked out going through the Baltimore Tunnels. It is not comforting to know that I am going under the Baltimore Harbor. I worry about them flooding! Will always take the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

This was the bridge I first drove on. I grew up right over the bridge and drove at as a 16 year old….not scary at all. I have probably been on that bridge thousands of times.

Even though I can’t stand to drive over bridges. I think I’d do it for $25 a trip. Hell, I might go down there and start doing it for $20 a trip. Make a couple hundred a day just to take people over the bridge. I was never afraid of bridges till a guy I was dating (a tow truck driver) took me on the big bridge in NJ and told me to get out of the truck, then stood with me & said stand still. Then he asked me if I could feel it moving. That was scary because I could feel the slight sway. Yikes!!!

I have never been to this Bridge. So beautiful. I have lived near the Mackinaw Bridge In Michigan, which is 5 miles in lenghth & crosses over the joining of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. They also have a driving service that will drive you and your vehicle across the bridge if you are scared to try it yourself. Personally, I think the drive is beautiful but my daughter is terrified of it.

Love the Bay Bridge, one of the most memorable times was back when I was little the first span had just opened and we got caught in a traffic jam on the bridge. We were on the bridge for quite a long time. Its when you are sitting still you can feel the bridge sway. Everyone was out of there cars wandering around. Pretty cool, we had lunch on the hood of the car.

Well Tony according to Wikipedia the total length of the bridge is 4.316 miles.
We have our own nice bridge here in Denmark, it is not scary to drive over, but it can be interesting in bad weather.

I drove back and forth to work everyday on this bridge and I dont find it scary at all. There are times when you can feel the bridge wobble a bit. I think some of the grim history is more scary considering there are documented reports of a couple of bodies that fell into the concrete pillars while being constructed. There are also many reports of folks taking the leap off the top to their deaths…..one of which my older brother knew a girl from high school that commited suicide there.
Sounds like this bridge is quite an impressive place with interesting history. I sure want to visit it someday.
