We could not afford to miss this – see how the Volvo truck nicknamed “The Iron Knight” with a 13-liter turbodiesel engine that delivers 2400 hp and 6000 Nm of torque sets a world speed record! Volvo Trucks has announced that their truck Iron Knight broke two speed records – the 500 and 1000 meters.
The Monumental Iron Knight of Volvo set two new speed records – for trucks they are measured at 500 and 1000 meters. The record for 500 meters, was scored by the great Iron Knight with an average speed of 131.29 kilometers in just 13.71 seconds. Even more interesting is the record of 1000 meters, scoring an average of 169 km in just 21:29 seconds.
All this is thanks to a huge 13-liter turbodiesel engine which has four turbochargers and a large intercooler. The result is 2400 horsepower and 6000 Nm of torque. Transmission handles dual-clutch gearbox which transmits power to the rear wheels. The people in Volvo Trucks emphasized that they used the transmission of I-Shift Dual Clutch, located on standard trucks from the FH series, whereas the clutch is enhanced, while the blades are made of synthesized materials. The electrical and electronic systems are with reduced dimensions, and the software is reprogrammed. The aim of the software change is the optimal performance of the engine as well as the I-Shift Dual Clutch transmission – similar to that of the Volvo FH models.
Behind the wheel of the 4.5-ton colossus was Boije Ovebrink who once was a European Truck Racing champion and already has five speed records in his portfolio. Although the particular record is not the truck’s maximum speed, Iron Knight managed to reach a top speed of 276 mph during the testing.
Its predecessor which was also a record-breaker was the Mean Green – a hybrid truck, but considering that the Iron Knight develops 600 horsepower more and weighs over a ton less, the crew at the company Volvo is expecting to break records again. The record attempt was carried out on a closed-off test track at a former airport in the north of Sweden.
