On a dam such as the Three Gorges Dam in China, you might be wondering how they handle and move the ships, when suddenly extreme changes in the water level occur? The answer is with the help of the largest ship elevator in the world. On Sunday, September 18th in Yichang City, China was opened the largest ship lift at the Three Gorges Dam. With the opening of the new lift is expected that six million additional tons of goods can be transported annually. The largest dam in the world is Three Gorges Dam in China, and now it has an elevator to match.
The dam is 113 meters high, 120 meters long and weighs more than 15,000 tons. Therefore we are talking about a huge structure used to move ships beyond the dam, so they continue their navigation on the Yangtze River.
The recently opened lift immediately increased the capacity of the dam, that is, the traffic of the ships. If by now, a boat was passing the dam in 3 hours, now this time has been shortened to just 40 minutes.
The lift can carry boats weighing up to 3,000 tons (3 million kg) and the boat can be up to 113 meters high. The heavy lift itself weighs 15 thousand tons and carries vessels upward or downward to cross the dam.
With the construction of the lift the Three Gorges Dam is now finished. The dam produces energy, increases the capacity of freight traffic and reduces the risk of flooding.
With the arrival of the lift ships can save a lot of time. Cruise ships and small cargo ships in fact cross within an hour, or longer if a large ship is on the other side of the dam. Larger ships are still using a so-called kick sail to pass the dam.
