For many, the idea of “printing” of a building, a shirt, a statue, or even a prosthetic limb may seem like a science fiction scenario, such as three-dimensional printing is most common in our time.
Recently, the company Local Motors from Arizona has designed, developed and led the first car in the world built with three-dimensional printing. The procedure lasted only 44 hours and has sparked global interest.
The model Strati is a small two-seater electric city car. Most of the components, such as the battery, the motor, the wiring and the posts are made conventionally, but the frame and the roof are manufactured through a vast three-dimensional printer.
With this innovative car, the Local Motors plans to change the way vehicles are manufactured and judging by the time it took to construct and design, they probably will. According to the website of the company, Strati consists of 40 pieces in contrast to conventional cars for which are needed at least 22,000 and sometimes more.
The first models available on the market are expected to be released by the end of September, and the company hopes will change the future of cars.
