Keiichi Tsuchiya’s popularity quickly spread among the so-called “hashiriya” (yap. street racers). In 1987 he was spotted by leading tuning media in Japan, and was asked to shoot several films in order to demonstrate his techniques which to this day inspire many professional athletes worldwide. This aroused the interest of several car magazines who agreed to produce a film about the so-called touge-run (downhill and uphill mountain road) of Tsuchiya.

The film known as “Pluspy” inspired many followers of drifting techniques and increased the popularity of this style, like on the streets and among professional athletes as well. So in 1988 with the help of one of the bosses of the leading automotive magazine Option he began conducting the first drift race in the world, called the D1 Grand Prix. That year on the Tsukuba track in Japan was organized the first drift competition D1 Grand Prix, which promoted technology in the automotive community.

As it was expected, Western enthusiasts also appeared who were influenced by the magic of drifting. In 1993, was organized the first race outside of Japan, held on Willow Springs racetrack in California. Gradually, the sport gained popularity and won fans all over the world, and today is especially popular in North America, Europe, Australia, and of course Japan.
