1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR W 196-S
The sports car Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR was created largely under the influence of ideas and design solutions, tested in 1952 on the model of the 300 SL which took part in the race Mille Miglia, as well as its road version, which came out in 1954. It was the 300 SL which has provided the new racing model with the necessary qualities such as light weight and high rigidity of the steel tubular spatial structure supporting the aluminum body. Innovations have been -- five-speed transmission, 16-inch wheels and larger diameter brake drums.
The engine was borrowed from Formula 1 cars, namely the model W 196, known by numerous victories in international competitions such as the Grand Prix of France and Italy, the Argentine Grand Prix race at the Nurburgring and Avus ring in Berlin.
The volume of the eight-cylinder engine with direct injection and two spark plugs per cylinder has been increased to 3.0 liters, resulting in increased output of 310 hp at 7400 rpm. Maximum torque was 317 Nm. The powerful engine was set to a length in front of the vehicle with the lateral tilt of 33 degrees.
