1979 Toyota Pickup 4×4
An exceptionally sturdy frame, solid front and rear axle together with one of the most reliable engines in automotive history. All of these features were quite enough for Toyota’s first factory-built 4WD pickup truck to be firmly established as a true icon in truck culture.
The already proven 2.2 liter four-cylinder 20R engine with overhead cam, delivered enough power for the agile off-road truck. A 5-speed manual transmission together with the rugged 3-speed transfer case allowed the truck to easily navigate through toughest terrains.
The front lock-out hubs improved the truck’s fuel efficiency when the 4WD is not needed. The pickup truck was equipped with power steering and power brakes. This pioneering 4×4 pickup is absolutely stunning and ready to go. It was cheap, reliable easy to work on and to maintain.
Over the years, the 20R four-cylinder engine paved the way to four and six-cylinders with newer design; the solid front axle was replaced with a more flexible independent suspension, and thus the pickup truck received the name Toyota Tacoma. However, with all these changes the youthful spirit and rugged capability of the original 1979 Toyota 4×4 pickup was not diminished.
In 1982, the round headlamps were replaced by square ones, which made this style the most classic one.
