Volkswagen Karmann Ghia

In the past, there was virtually no automaker thereof, except for Italian, for which parts of the body or roof structures for a gig were not to be released by coachbuilder Karmann located in Osnabrueck. However, since the company was founded in 1901, Karmann’s name appeared only once in the model designation. It was the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. In this series, from 1955 to 1974, the model series was produced with cabriolet and coupe with its own design and based on long-term cooperation partner for Volkswagen. Today, it is a classic car of German production.

The first of the models became Type 14 entitled Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, produced from 1955 to 1974. The chassis and running gear of the VW Karmann Ghia coupé or convertible was delivered by the Volkswagen partner in sales and were identical to the ones produced in the generation of those years VW Käfer. The car received the name Ghia from the Italian design firm Carrozzeria Ghia, which developed the design of the model.

The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia in both body versions was equipped with the well-known 30 hp boxer engine on the VW Käfer. Such a low-powered engine did not allow the coupe and convertible, even to accelerate to a maximum speed of 120 km / h. That which decades later did not stop fans of classic cars, has been adopted by many contemporaries at the time of release of the model as something curious: outside -- a sports car, and power and noise of a typical VW Käfer.
