Toyota 2000GT

Toyota 2000GT is a Japanese rear-drive two-seater sports car produced in limited edition. By the mid-1960s, Toyota, which already at that time became known, has decided not to limit itself to cars and subcompacts and tried to enter the market of sports cars. However, most of Toyota, feeling the lack of experience in the production of sports cars, decided to entrust the car to Yamaha’s development, which has proposed to use the remaining unclaimed order for Honda and put it at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1965.

The concept car with a sleek exterior was greeted positively, and before the model went into production, two special samples were released with an open body for the filming of the James Bond movie in Japan “You Only Live Twice.” The car was driven by the main Bond girl, Aki (Akiko Wakabayashi). The first production models were delivered to customers in 1967 at a price of 6800 US dollars.

For a long time the Toyota 2000GT remained the fastest car of Japan, and the company even attempted to reach the North American market, suggesting there is an automatic transaxle. However, only 63 copies were sold in the US, and in total of five years, 351 samples were released: the Nissan company had just launched its 240z model.
