Ferrari 250 GTO
The history of the Ferrari 250 GTO started in 1961, on the eve of the change of technical regulations in the class of races Gran Turismo. Then a small team of engineers of the Italian company headed by Giotto Bizzarini designed a car that would meet the new requirements. As a basis they decided to take the proven model Ferrari 250, which was produced in 1956 and has already won a lot of challenging competitions. The new car was called by the modification of last year’s short-based Ferrari 250 GT SWB. This solution allowed to outwit the FIA, because to be eligible for racing, it was necessary to release at least a hundred copies of the series. The scuderia also made a total of 40 new cars. Officially, the car was known as the Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione. A GTO name stands for Gran Tourismo Omologato, that is, “admitted to GT racing.”
In fact, the new version is quite different from the standard Ferrari 250. Constructors maximized the ease of auto chassis and designed completely new streamlined bodywork with a revolutionary rear spoiler. The service of the full-provider of bodies Pininfarina was abandoned. As a result, the weight of GTO was only 878 kg. And, of course, independent suspension and disc brakes was installed on all wheels on the car.
Under the hood, the new supercar flaunted a reliable and seasoned engine from the Ferrari 250 Testarossa. The V12 with volume of 2.95 liters developed capacity of 300 hp at 7500 rev / min. And its thirst was quenched by the 6 two-chamber Weber carburettors. Under the motor picked up a 5-speed gearbox.
In 1964, the GTO has passed thorough modernization. On cars was set a new limited slip differential, and Pininfarina has designed the ultra-low body.
