Lincoln Continental
The Lincoln Continental is a car of the “lux” class, manufactured by Lincoln (a subsidiary of the Ford Motor Company) from 1939 to 1948 and from 1956 to 2002. Although it bears much in common with less pricey Ford models, the Lincoln Continental still had its own recognizable appearance, a number of various options as well as a luxurious finish.
The car was the pinnacle of luxury in the fifties and sixties of the 20th century. It was driven by celebrities like baseball player Babe Ruth and singer Elvis Presley. In it drove presidents as well, from John F. Kennedy to Ronald Reagan.
The Continental has been the flagship of Lincoln for a long time. In 1980 the Continental is not based on the full-size, but on the mid-size platform of the Ford Taurus, which allowed it to compete with European and Japanese models of the same class. The sales of the Continental peaked in 1990, but this Lincoln model was soon overtaken by Japanese and German competitors whose cars were better.
Production ceased in 2002 when Continental was replaced by the LS model and, later, by the MKS. Lincoln’s last Continental came down the assembly line in Michigan in 2002.
The return of the Lincoln Continental is part of the multi-year renewal of the Lincoln brand, which includes several new models with a plan for a major breakthrough on the Chinese market.
