Citroen DS

Writing about the Citroen DS is like to write an article about Marilyn Monroe, about which nothing new can not be said, but which would still concern the hearts of the stronger half of mankind.

The Citroën DS was a business class car produced by the French firm Citroen in 1955-1975. It had the informal name “Goddess” because of the fact that the DS in French sounds exactly like the word Déesse which means Goddess in French. In addition to the unusual appearance was the original hydraulic system, combined with the powertrain, steering, brakes, and hydropneumatic suspension. The car took third place in the “Car of the Century” contest.

First introduced on October 5, 1955 at the 42nd Paris Motor Show, the car made a splash, which is not capable to produce even today the most audacious car of the future. Serial production of the car began a month after its presentation at the Paris Motor Show. Citroen dealerships wanted to have the car, despite some flaws. Design, comfort and superior driving characteristics were such a success that a year later appeared on the market the cost-effective option Citroen ID too.

The engine for the DS originally anticipated a 6-cylinder boxer (1.8 liters), but to create a powerful and at the same time cost-effective option it did not work. As a result, the DS was equipped with a modernized version of the engine of the Citroen Traction Avanto -- a 4-cylinder, with volume of 1,911 liters. With that much displacement the engine reached only 69 hp at 4500 rev. / min. The car was equipped with a semi-automatic, and the wheels with disc brakes, which significantly reduces the braking distance.

In April 1975, the last Citroen DS was released. In just 20 years were produced 1,456,115 vehicles, the income from which exceeds the income of similar French companies producing cars of the same class.
