1946-1968 Dodge Power Wagon
The Dodge Power Wagon, same as the Willy CJ-2A, was a thinly disguised version of a military vehicle, specifically the Dodge 3/4 ton WC-series trucks which were used in World War II. This was the first civilian truck with four wheel drive in the U.S.
Under that gigantic hood was not installed an equally giant V8 engine. Instead, contrary to their name, these trucks were powered by a 94-hp, 230-cid I6. Later in 1961 was offered a bigger 251-cid engine. Yet these trucks did not require a lot of horsepower to get their job done. Instead of horsepower, they used ultra-low axle gearing and transmission. And thanks to their massive tires, the Dodge Power Wagons had more than 10 inches of ground clearance under each of their axles and could haul about 3000 pounds in their beds.
The original Power Wagons would stay in service for the following. Today, the Legacy Power Wagon shop from Jacksonville, Texas offers fully restored Power Wagon trucks equipped with V8 or diesel engine.
