1984-2001 Jeep Cherokee (XJ)
Although fans of General Motors and Ford would argue that the Ford Bronco II and the 1983 S-10 Chevy Blazer were the very first compact SUVs, it was actually the Jeep Cherokee XJ which set the stage for what modern crossovers and SUVs would later become. The Jeep Cherokee did not use a conventional body-on-frame construction. Rather than that, Jeep Cherokee XJs were built with unibody, which was a combination of the body and frame like passenger cars. Perhaps most importantly, the Jeep Cherokee XJ was available as a two or four doors version. The Chevy and Ford trucks would get proper four-door versions yet in 1991.
