1993-1997 Land Rover Defender
When the manufacturer imported only 500 samples of the five-door Defender 110 as a 1993 model year, many of these SUVs were bought instantly which proved to be a wise move. Today these rare beasts are worth twice or thrice as much than the original $39,900 suggested retail price.
The Defender 110 was the rugged Land Rover which the American people had been yearning for—as an opposite of Range Rover which was a symbol for luxurious status. In 1994, Land Rover imported the shorter Defender 90 with two doors and that model was on sale until 1997. Those early D90s were powered by Rover’s 3.9L V8 paired with 5-speed manual transmission. At the time, the stock model of the Land Rover Defender 90 was more capable for offroad compared to the Jeep Wrangler. As a result, the reputation of these classically styled and stout 4X4 SUVs became stronger. Since the Defender D90 was so rustic, it faced far fewer electronic issues than the Land Rover Discovery and Range Rover sold in the late ‘90s.
