1988-1998 Chevy and GMC Pickups
GM played it safe when it comes to pickup trucks for a while. The boxy trucks that this company produced in the period between 1973 and 1987 were strong and dependable but did not made a revolution. That situation changed in 1988 with the release of the new GMT 400. The body of the truck was made narrower than the previous model, yet there was more space inside. And what was really groundbreaking was the chassis. The old-style solid axle was replaced with an independent front suspension that was sprung by torsion bars. This meant that these big pickups with four wheel drive not only steered more like cars, but also drove better. And the new front axle disconnect system meant that the driver could shift into four wheel drive at any speed. This independent front suspension system would become the standard for light duty trucks. When it was put together with the 5.7L V8 and a 5-speed manual transmission in the four-wheel-drive Sportside, General Motors had a fun dirt vehicle in its hands.
